ImageThe Tompkins County Public Library has announced the July opening of two extraordinary art exhibits.

A Senior Summer, curated by Sue Kilgore and Mary Schuler, and dedicated to Germaine Colvin, will be on display throughout the Library from July 6 through July 30, and The Original Doll as Art 2009, presented by the Ithaca Doll Artists, will be displayed in the Avenue of the Friends throughout the month of July.

A free opening reception for these fascinating exhibits will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Thursday, July 9 in the BorgWarner Community Room.

Featuring the work of more than 40 senior artists, A Senior Summer demonstrates the unique, and often profound connections, among the participating creators.

From shared memories to dreams of the future, the work exhibited in A Senior Summer masterfully captures the expression, emotion, energy and personality of each artist.

One of the original curators of this exhibit, Colvin was forced to relinquish her duties while she courageously battled cancer.  The show is now dedicated in her memory in recognition of her lifetime of dedication to art, education and humanity.

The Original Doll as Art 2009 features three different types of dolls.

For the ArtDoll Challenge, “Wing It,” artists chose to creatively interpret the concept of wings on a three-dimensional form.  As a result of this challenge, pieces like “Not your ordinary gypsy moth” and other fantastical creatures take flight.

In another challenge, “The Little Old Lady in …” presents highly original and creative “old ladies.”

Finally, several hand- sculpted fabric heads created at a workshop led by Canadian dollmaker, Peggy Wilson, show the incredible talent of many of our local artists.

The exhibit will be on display in the Avenue of the Friends throughout the month of July.
