ImageA Broadway actor, an acclaimed author and a bevy of beloved local musicians will visit the Tompkins County Public Library this fall in celebration of this year’s Community Read of The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck.

Programs planned in conjunction with the 8th Annual Community Read include book discussion groups, a literary discussion by author Philipp Meyer, a theatrical performance by stage actor Anthony Newfield and a musical performance by Johnny Russo and friends .

Called “the most American of American classics”, The Grapes of Wrath tells the emotional story of an Oklahoma farm family driven from their home during the Dust Bowl migration of the 1930s in search of a brighter future in the promised land of California.  Themes of spirituality, dignity and social justice resonate as clearly today as they did when the book was written in the late 1930s.

“The Grapes of Wrath is a particularly timely selection for this year’s Community Read,” said Sarah Glogowski, reader’s services librarian and community read coordinator for TCPL, said.  “It forces us to look at issues of homelessness, immigration and self-preservation—all issues at the forefront of our country”.

The programs being planned in celebration of this year’s read are:

  • Wednesday, September 16, 2009, 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM and Thursday, September 17, 2009 from 7:00 to 8:00 PM in the Library’s BorgWarner Community Room West, The Grapes of Wrath Book Discussion Group---Community members are invited to join Glogowski for a lively discussion of the book.  Participants may attend one or both of these programs.
