ImageOn Friday, November 20, Wells College will host “Stop Look Listen,” an evening-length work by Katherine Kramer Projects. This interactive performance combines dancers blending contemporary dance and tap, with live musicians playing an original score of Afro/Brazilian/Gypsy music. The performance, which is part of Wells College’s Arts and Lecture Series, begins at 7:30 p.m. in Phipps Auditorium of Macmillan Hall.

“Stop Look Listen” investigates themes of instinct, listening and surprise. Set in the wake of a catastrophic event, the performers seek intimacy and hope. Moving together through space and sound, 4 dancers and 5 musicians become an embodiment of jazz: playful, improvisational and deeply human. The set consists of reed baskets that are rearranged throughout the piece, becoming instruments, possessions and home.

Kramer is the producing artistic director of “Rhythm Explosion,” a Bozeman, Montana summer festival dedicated to jazz and world music and dance. Kramer was one of 12 dancers to work with the late American tap legend Charles “Honi” Coles at The Colorado Dance Festival in 1989, in the first creative residency for tap. She was a featured soloist at the 1996 Tap Extravaganza in New York. Kramer has taught at numerous tap festivals, and has choreographed for theatre, opera and film, including choreographing for Robert Redford in the film “The Horse Whisperer.” Since 2006, Kramer has worked as a Master Teacher for the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts.

Additionally, Kramer will be offering free, open master classes on Wednesday, November 18 and Thursday, November 19 from 4:40-6:00 p.m. in the Schwartz Center Dance Studio on the Wells College campus.
