Image'Problems or Possibilities' is a short play directed and created by Cynthia Henderson, an Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre Arts at Ithaca College, through her program Performing Arts for Social Change.

The play is based on a true story and was created to open the eyes of its audience to what it is like to be and interact with a student with social disabilities. The performance will be Sunday, February 21st at 2pm at the Boynton Middle School.

In an effort to support those students living with mental disabilities and their families, the Expanding Possibilities Project is organizing events throughout the year that support collaboration between school-based service systems and mental health systems in our area.

The first event will be a performance piece entitled “Problems or Possibilities,” the story of Rose, a young woman with emotional issues that challenge her success at school. Through Cynthia’s work with Performing Arts for Social Change, the project has gained the attention of the Park School of Communication at Ithaca College.  Steve Gordon, the Assistant Professor of Film and Television Program Development and Niko Mason are producing a piece for the IC STUDIO television show titled ‘Changing our World, One Story at Time.” In addition, Steve and his student crew are putting together a documentary on the making of the performance including interviews with cast, director, and the mother and daughter the story is based on.

The play is being performed by local and IC student actors. There will also be a talkback after the performance with the actors and others who have supported the project. A reception, courtesy of Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, will follow the performance.
