hangar_piano120The Piano Lesson, by famous American playwright August Wilson plays at the Hangar Theatre from August 4th to the 14th. This Pulitzer Prize-winning drama portrays both the uniquely African-American and universal struggle of family strife and love.

Wilson begins the story of The Piano Lesson in the 1930's Pittsburgh living room of Berniece Charles and revolves around the family heirloom, an elaborately carved piano, bearing portraits of their ancestors, sculpted by their great-grandfather after it was sold in trade for his wife and son.

Berniece wants to pass the heirloom on to her daughter, but her brother has other plans. As the two siblings dispute over the piano's future and their own legacy, the tale of the family's struggle from slavery to freedom begins to surface. The Piano Lesson touches on the universal themes of family strife and love, while being laced throughout with humor and music.

The Piano Lesson will appear at the Hangar August 4th through the 14th due to the support of Cayuga Medical Center and WENY-TV. Tickets are available at Ticket Center Ithaca and at the theatre's box office one hour prior to curtain.
