hc_JohnTidd'Dear Friend Amelia - Lives & Letters in the Civil War,' an exhibit honoring the sesquicentennial of the Civil War, and recognizing the lives and sacrifices of local people who served in the war opens at the History Center February 4th. Exploring the lives of the families and loved ones left behind, the centerpiece of the exhibit will be letters of soldiers, particularly the letters of Major Doctor Tarbell of Ithaca, and Private John Tidd of Caroline.

The letters of John Tidd are featured in a book being published in January by Six Mile Creek Press, written by Mary Jordan and Joyce Hatch, with Ron Ostman and Harry Littell, called Dear Friend Amelia - The Civil War Letters of Private John Tidd. By turns deeply moving and informative, the authors have woven together a remarkable story about life during the Civil War. Historical insights are layered among the letters of Tidd to his girl back home in Tompkins County. They highlight the varied aspects of a common soldier's world, from the loneliness and boredom of guard duty, to the ghastliness of battle.  This important book has much to teach about war and its searing impact on ordinary people.

Mary Jordan, the owner of the letters, has generously lent them to The History Center for the duration of the exhibit.

The exhibit will be on view from Feb 4th through July 2011
