wellsAurora, New York -- The Wells College Visual Arts Department presents an exhibition of work by Ottawa artist Jennifer Macklem titled “Peaceable Kingdom.” The exhibit will be on display in the String Room Gallery (SRG) of Main Building from August 31 to October 7. The gallery is free, and the public is cordially invited to view the show. An opening reception will be held on Wednesday, August 31 from 6 to 8 p.m.; light refreshments will be served.

The exhibit will feature sculpture installations and video works by Macklem, associate professor of sculpture at the University of Ottawa and the director of the graduate program in the visual arts department. Macklem’s work uses a variety of materials to contribute to a style that bridges artistic forms. Her sculpture, video, drawings, and collaborative works draw on themes of nature, language, narrative and biodiversity to create intriguing experimental pieces.

Macklem completed her undergraduate studies at the Parson School of Design in France and earned her MFA at UQAM in Montreal, Canada. In 2007, her video animation work was screened in five U.S. venues, including three locations in Los Angeles. Her solo exhibitions include “l'hiver: volet 1” at Circa Gallery in Montreal and “Our Animal Nature” at the non-profit Garden Gallery in the UK. Macklem recently presented a collaborative sculpture at the Taewha River Eco Art Festival in Ulsan, Korea and is working on a public art project for the Childrens' Hospital of Eastern Ontario. She has taught in British Columbia and New Brunswick.

The String Room Gallery is a center for the exhibition of contemporary art in the Finger Lakes region of New York. It is located on the Wells College campus in the southwest corner of the first floor of Main Building. Hours are Tuesday through Friday from 12 to 5 pm; and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 pm.
