ihspac_120IPEI and the Fine Arts Booster Group announce the Rella and Barney Cohn Music Scholarship Fund, established by Abby Cohn in memory of her parents and in honor of the excellent music education available in the Ithaca City School District public schools.  The fund will provide annual music scholarships for summer study through the Ithaca Youth Bureau Summer Band and Orchestra Program.

“Continuing music education is important to students’ overall academic, artistic and social development.  Summer time music activities help middle school students, in particular, solidify their skills and continue music study into their high school years,” notes Abby Cohn. “My daughters benefitted greatly from the rich musical offerings at Boynton Middle School as well as through participation in the IYB Summer Band and Orchestra Programs The breadth, variety and excellence of these opportunities have had a real impact on them. I particularly want to recognize Michael Allen for his leadership and enthusiasm.  This fund also honors my parents and their commitment to music education in all its forms.”

At the Boynton Middle School Band concert, “The Festival of Music”, the donor will be recognized.   The concert will be held January 12, 2012, 7:00 p.m. at the Ithaca High School Performing Arts Center’s Kulp Auditorium.

The concert will feature the Boynton Middle School Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble and Elementary Festival Band including students from the Enfield, South Hill, Fall Creek and Cayuga Heights Bands.  Students from the Elizabeth Ann Clune Montessori School will participate in the Elementary and Middle School Festival Bands.  The featured student soloists will be Meghan Sever (clarinet) and Gabe Miller (Marimba).  The student conductor will be 6th grader, Garrett Nunninck.  The pre-concert recital will feature student pianists and the guest conductors will be Ryan Zawel, Cindy Daly, Allison Scott and Jackie Bintz.

The Rella and Barney Cohn Music Scholarship Fund will be administered by the Ithaca Public Education Initiative (IPEI) with assistance from the Fine Arts Booster Group, an IPEI affiliate, and the Ithaca Youth Bureau.
