museumweekThe History Center in Tompkins County announced its participation in New York State's Museum Week 2012 and New York State's Heritage Weekend.

The History Center will open its doors for Heritage Weekend on May 19th, and for Museum Week on May 31st, June 2nd and June 5th, 2012. People from all over New York State will be able to visit and admire crazy quilts and silk quilts dating from the mid- and late-19th century at The History Center in Tompkins County. This new batch of quilts, as part of the revolving display in the Historic Quilts Unwrapped exhibit, will display wild patterns, stark colors and delicate fabrics for the public's enjoyment throughout the month of May.

These partnerships testify to New York’s abundant variety of wonderful museums - their contributions to our culture and local economies, and the one-of-a-kind personal experiences they offer visitors every day.

Last year Heritage Weekend was made possible through partnerships with 143 federal, state, and private organizations, with more than 1,160 volunteers that had attracted 20,000 visitors. Not only does this weekend celebrate our unique historical background but it also boosts our local economy.

Heritage Weekend 2011 brought in more than $1.6 million in two days. This year, Heritage Weekend counts over 150 attractions and is made possible thanks to the generous support of the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area, National Park Service, I Love NY, the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor and  the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation.

Organized by I love NY, Museum Week will feature museums, zoos, botanical gardens, historic homes, living history museums, arts centers and cultural organizations throughout New York State.
