SMART TALK
by Dr. Dot Pilcrow
PROPHECY/PROPHESY: Last Sunday, I attended Mass at Holy Mother of Retribution in Los Libidos. I usually go to Our Lady of Loving Disapproval right here in Underbelly, but I took the weekend to visit my new granddaughter.
The liturgist drove me crazy with her reading of the dry bones story in Ezekiel, in which the prophet is ordered to prophesy to the bones. That verb came up several times, and the reader always pronounced it like prophecy.
Prophesy is the verb, and it's pronounced PRAH-feh-sigh. Prophecy is the noun, and it's pronounced PRAH-feh-see.
I was surprised to hear the nice lady mispronounce the word in a college town, but at least she was consistent. A short course of treatment here at the Center for English as a First Language would fix her right up.
