art_lifeformingArt in the Heart of the City Brings Fifteen New Sculptures to Downtown Ithaca (Ithaca, NY)  Fifteen new public art pieces will be introduced to Downtown Ithaca on Friday, July 6th at 5:00 PM as Art in the Heart of the City returns for the thirteenth year.

The opening ceremony kicks off in the Bernie Milton Pavilion on the Commons with featured guests Mayor Svante Myrick; Downtown Ithaca Alliance Executive Director Gary Ferguson; Community Arts Partnership Executive Director Brett Bossard; City of Ithaca Director of Planning and Development JoAnn Cornish; and a representative from the Public Arts Commission. Refreshments and a walking tour of the art pieces will follow the introductory remarks.

Returning to this year’s Art in the Heart exhibition is Trumansburg artist Jay Seaman, whose striking metal sculptures Cheetah and Blue Heron can be seen in the planters adjacent to the chess area on the Commons.

Also in the chess area is Tropical Encounter, created by Glenn Zweygardt, a Professor Emeritus at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Another of Zweygardt’s sculptures, Good Morning Blues, can be viewed in front of the Tompkins County Public Library.

Returning artist Liz Sibley Fletcher’s fired clay sculptures are located in the planter next to the playground on the Commons. Her whimsical turtle entitled Determined to Stay and adorable puppy Ready to Play are already favorites with the children. Fletcher lives and works in New Hampshire.

Recycled and found industrial materials play a significant role in Dundee-based sculptor Sam Castner’s pieces in front of Madeline’s on Aurora Street. Created expressly for this exhibition, these pieces are titled Cosmos, which stands 16 feet in height, and Quasar.

Also created just for Art in the Heart 2012 is a mosaic sculpture entitled Spirit of the Trees by Rochester artist Barron Naegel; the work has been installed in the old fountain planter in front of Home Dairy Alley. Naegel’s second piece, As Long as It Plays, can be seen in Bank Alley in front of M&T.

Earlton, New York artist Bob Turan brings us the large metal sculpture Triangle Tango near Mayor Myrick’s parking space park at City Hall and the colorful Music of the Squares in the planter behind Bernie Milton pavilion.

Rounding out this year’s Art in the Heart exhibition are three visually and materially diverse sculptures by New Jersey artist Mary C. Angers. They are Sun to Moon Rotation at the Tioga Street side of Bank Alley and Sun to Moon Cube and City to Country Cube on Cayuga Street in front of Handwork.
