gloryThe Tompkins County Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission launches its Civil War film series this Sunday, September 30, with the showing of the acclaimed feature film “Glory.”

The screening will take place beginning at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Cinemapolis, 120 E. Green Street, Ithaca.  Cinemapolis is cosponsoring the event.

Starring Morgan Freeman, Matthew Broderick, and Denzel Washington (who won the 1989 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role), the film “Glory” is a cinematic interpretation of the story of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first all-black regiment in the U.S. military. Commanded by white abolitionist Robert Gould Shaw, the unit was the first with African-American troops to see combat, and their actions helped demonstrate how crucial African Americans would be to the war effort. “Glory” won numerous awards and is often at or near the top of lists of best Civil War films ever made.

The film will be the first in a series of Civil War feature films and documentaries sponsored by the Civil War Commission, Cinemapolis, and the Tompkins County Public Library, which will take place over the next three years.

Sunday’s screening of “Glory” will be followed by a moderated discussion.
