The Community Arts Partnership of Tompkins County (CAP) and The Park School of Communications at Ithaca College announced the completion of the pilot year of the Park Award for Photo Activism. The project, which is a joint program of Ithaca College’s Park School, CAP, and the Park Foundation, was designed to serve as a link between students and the greater Ithaca community.

Degree majors with proven photographic skills and a commitment to community activism have been paired with participating non-profits in Tompkins County to provide in-depth visual explorations of the contributions these organizations make to their constituencies and our community. During the current semester, a special credit-bearing documentary photography course led by Professor Janice Levy was convened to provide students with ongoing guidance and support for these projects.

The community will have two opportunities to see the fruits of their labor. The first, an exhibition of selected images from all twelve projects, will be on display from May 2nd through the 30th at the CAP ArtSpace inside Center Ithaca. An opening reception will be held as part of First Friday Gallery Night on Friday, May 3rd from 5 to 8 pm. The second opportunity takes place at Cinemapolis on Sunday, May 5th at 2 pm. This complete screening of all the documentary photo projects is topped off with the announcement of the three awards.

A jury including National Geographic photographer Lynn Johnson will review the work, and cash awards will be donated to the non-profit organizations represented in the winning projects as follows: first place-$1,000; second place-$500; third place-$300. These donations will be made in the names of the respective winning students. Both events are free and open to the public.
