By Dr. Will S. Sert

IS-IS:  This seems to be the official intellectual stuttering disorder.  Listen carefully - all around you, the linguistically impaired are loftily saying, "The thing is-is that..." or, "The problem is-is that..."

And I swear I've heard triples!  Why?  Just one will do nicely, thank you.

At the Institute for the Linguistically Impaired, we find this disorder in patients from all levels of society.  They don't seem to listen to themselves or hear the absurdity of the repetition when others say it.

The same patients often also say things like, "Attending the meeting were Mrs. Smith, Mr. Jones, and myself," instead of the correct I.

ITHACA, NY - A showcase of theatre, dance, music and circus comes to the Cornell Schwartz Center this November as Moliere's hilarious "comedy-ballet" The Bourgeois Gentleman takes the stage. Molière is well known for his many plays based in the comic improvisation form, commedia dell'Arte, including The Misanthrope and The Miser. The Bourgeois Gentleman follows Monsieur Jourdain, a Parisian bourgeois (of the social middle class) whose desire to be known as a gentleman guides his every action. Outrageous antics ensue as the boorish Jourdain brings in an array of social "consultants" to help him attain upperclass status.

posticon SMART TALK: Invited Guest

Smart TalkSmart TalkSMART TALK
By  Dr. Ced Riley

INVITED GUEST:  The staff at the Institute for the Linguistically Impaired chuckles when our local Underbelly, Texas, hostelry, the Hotel Inn, calls its customers "guests."  "Guest" is obviously a euphemism for "customers."  In southern England's Cornwall, the locals have an especially accurate local term for tourists: "victims."

A guest is someone you've invited in to entertain for a time at no charge.  Saying invited guest is as redundant as saying free gift.

Uninvited guest and the TV term guest host are oxymorons.  An uninvited guest is, after all, an intruder, a gate crasher, or a party crasher.  The term probably began as a joke and gained acceptance by the linguistically impaired, like a little bit pregnant.

And a permanent guest host on a TV show is a logical impossibility.  Jay Leno had to endure that label years ago on The Tonight Show.  If he were a language scholar like George Carlin, he would have ridiculed it to death immediately.

posticon The Jesus Factor Opens at the Kitchen

ImageCritically acclaimed playwright/actor/poet/comedian, Brian Dykstra (Clean Alternatives, Marriage Minuet, STRANGERHORSE), will perform his hilariously irreverent solo poetic rant at the Kitchen Theatre Company for six performances on the Kitchen Sink Series.

Dykstra's rage ignites in this outrageously funny, uncensored show about religious hypocrisy and power. Brian's last solo show received an extended Off-Broadway run and was hailed by critics, but did land him on several watch-lists including the NRA and Rush Limbaugh. The conservative talk show host put the word out against Dykstra as an "enemy"- this seemed odd because there was no indication that Limbaugh had seen his show.
