i.e.: Down the road from Underbelly, Texas, home of the Institute for the Linguistically Impaired, lies Los Libidos. There, many of the faculty at Bedspring Tech suffer from an odd strain of William F. Buckley Syndrome.

In casual conversation, they say the letters i.e. and e.g. Not only that, but they sometimes confuse one for the other.

I.e. stands for Latin words that mean that is or in other words; e.g., for for example. These abbreviations belong in dense, scholarly works written for maximum obfuscation to impress other scholars, never in good writing.

Professor Pompous Fatuous Failem, poor man, uses i.e. and e.g. in his email and speech.

posticon SMART TALK: Incredulous

By Saber S. Poder, N.P.

INCREDULOUS: In an old AP story, an agent named Leigh Steinberg was trying to make us feel better about the astronomical salaries in major league sports. At the time, ten million was beyond astronomical.

“And for people who find that incredulous,” he said, “it’s the same as yelling at a softdrink machine saying it’s ridiculous to put a dollar in when the same @#%* can cost five cents in your youth.”

At the time, a dollar for a drink was also a shock.

Of course, Steinberg should have said incredible. Or avoided the risk and said unbelievable, which is what incredible means.

Incredulous means unbelieving, so we could say that the people were incredulous over the incredible salaries.

But we’d never say that, would we.

IMPLEMENT: Alfred Kahn is a Chairman Emeritus of the Institute for the Linguistically Impaired’s board of directors. As chairman of the Civil Aeronautics Board during the Carter administration, Dr. Kahn fought a heroic but quixotic battle to get government officials, or at least those serving under him, to use plain English.

One of Kahn’s memos, now in the Institute archive, urged CAB workers and drones to say and write begin, initiate, offer, provide, exercise, administer, execute, use, carry out, or accomplish.

“If I never see to implement again,” he wrote, “I will die happy.

Alfred Kahn is one our heroes, so we pray that he has other reasons to die happy.

June 14, 2007 (ITHACA, NY)—The Hangar Theatre continues its 2007 Mainstage Season with magic, beauty, and the transformative power of love. From June 21st to July 7th, the Hangar presents the hit family musical, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Artistic Director Kevin Moriarty is excited for audiences to see this truly unique production of the enchanting classic about discovering beauty in the most unlikely places. “I’m thrilled that the Hangar audience will now have the opportunity to experience the exhilarating songs and beautiful story from the classic Disney film in a full-length musical,” says Moriarty. “I’m especially excited that the production will be directed by Wendy Dann, who directed Cats at the Hangar and was able to bring out all the beloved qualities of the material in a fresh new way. Even audiences who had seen the show before were dazzled by the experience of seeing it at the Hangar.”
