"Under Governor Andrew Cuomo's leadership, this preventive maintenance project is being done to improve safety and prolong the life of the bridge" Commissioner McDonald said. "I encourage motorists to slow down and stay alert when driving through the highway construction zone for this project and others across the state as the construction season gets underway."
The bridge has two lanes, with a four-foot sidewalk in the northbound direction. During the rehabilitation, the bridge will be widened to include a five-foot shoulder in the southbound direction and a six-foot shoulder northbound. Minor substructure repairs, decorative concrete parapets and new approach railing are also included in the project. The work will be done in two phases.
"A well-maintained bridge and highway system is critical for economic growth and job creation and I am very pleased that the State Department of Transportation will be making improvements to the bridge deck on Cayuga Heights Road over State Route 13 in the Village of Lansing," Senator Mike Nozzolio said.
"This bridge deck replacement is a very important project in my district," said Assemblywoman Barbara Lifton. "It should be one of our state's highest priorities to allocate capital funding to repair and replace our aging road and bridge infrastructure. It's always good to see these local projects going forward. And, of course, I am also pleased to see a local contractor, with well-paid union workers, doing the work."
Traffic will be maintained on site during most of the one-season construction duration. Signal controlled, alternating one-way traffic will also allow for coordinated movements on the adjacent on/off ramps. "Right on Red" turns will be prohibited at the site during construction.
The bridge will need to be fully closed to all traffic on two occasions of three days each for the placement and initial cure of the new concrete. During these closures, which will likely be from early Friday morning to early Monday morning, a detour using Route 13 will be in place, sending motorists east or west one exit to turn around. The exact dates of the three-day closures have yet to be determined, but the public will be informed ahead of time.
Vehicles over 8.5 feet wide will have to use an alternate route during the entire construction period.
The construction contractor for the project is Economy Paving, located in Cortland, NY. An open house meeting was held for this project in February, 2014 at the Village Of Lansing Hall.
