“I care about ensuring our nation becomes energy secure and that we end our dependence on Middle Eastern crude oil. What it fundamentally comes down to is that energy security is good for our national security and creates jobs right here at home,” said Reed.
The proposal would encourage energy efficiency, conservation and innovation, all aiming to help reduce cost of utilities for consumers and businesses. In addition, newly established voluntary standards will provide businesses with the information they need to become more energy efficient without big government mandates.
The bill also supports upgrades to energy infrastructure which bring electricity to our homes and businesses and provide heat in the winter. In addition, the bill helps to strengthen the electrical grid to ensure reliability and protect it from potential terrorists’ attacks.
Many of these initiatives are present in Reed’s proposal for energy security which was released earlier this fall. Reed’s Plan for America’s Energy Future is an all-of-the-above approach, incorporating the use of all available domestically available energy resources, from nuclear to coal and renewable, as well as improving delivery mechanisms, efficiency standards, reducing regulatory burdens, and training a workforce capable of competing for energy related jobs.
“It’s great to see a number of our ideas incorporated into a larger bill that we passed tonight. This is a step in the right direction toward an energy secure nation. Its only right that we continue to push forward in this fight, using all the tools we have available to us,” said Reed.
The bill now goes to the Senate for further consideration.
