The Tompkins County Department of Assessment will be mailing renewal exemption applications on March 1 for all exemptions that must be applied for on a yearly basis. A partial listing is: Applications are due by March 1. Low Income Senior / Enhanced STAR
|
While the application is due back by March 1, any supporting documentation including income tax information can be taken at any point up until April 15th so long as the exemption application is filed by March 1. We highly suggest to all applicants that they simply fill out the exemption application and mail it back to my office as soon as they receive the application so that it is not forgotten. Once the income tax information is completed, we will gladly match that to their already filed application.
In addition, for those Enhanced STAR recipients who signed up for the Income Verification Program, we have mailed out either a postcard for those who New York State verified their 2014 income and approved their eligibility for the exemption OR we mailed out a letter explaining that either NYS determined their income was too high or were unable to determine their income. It is imperative that the property owner read the post card or letter as it provides information that might allow the property owner to receive a greater exemption.
Finally for those property owners who had their Basic STAR exemption removed as they made over $500,000, if their 2014 income was under $500,000 they need to reapply by March 1, 2016.
While every single other application must be filed by March 1, the Agricultural Land exemption application must be filed by April 1, 2016. For the 2014 Assessment Roll, New York State finally offered the ability for an applicant who owns multiple parcels to file a single exemption application. An attempt was made to group an owner’s parcels on the renewal application.
Finally all property owners are encouraged to either call the Tompkins County Department of Assessment office or check on-line after May 1, 2016 to see what exemptions they were granted. All complaints on exemption denials must be filed by the 4th Tuesday of May (Grievance Day).
