"The expansion of the Sex Offender Registry to include the registrant's employment zip code is an important step towards ensuring the safety and well-being of all New Yorkers," said Senator Nozzolio. "As State Senator I will do all possible to make certain our residents are fully informed of potential threats that, not only live, but also work in their community."
In New York, there is currently no way to determine if a convicted registered sex offender is working in your neighborhood. While the state's Sex Offender Registry does allow the public to search by zip code, results only include offenders who are living, not working in that area. This legislation corrects a loophole in the current law to protect victims by improving the public's ability to obtain important information about whether a convicted registered sex offender is working in their community.
The measure awaits action by the New York State Assembly.
