A free food scraps recycling toolkit, including a kitchen caddy, compostable liners, and a transport container can be picked up at any drop spot or the Solid Waste Division office in Ithaca. The program accepts food scraps, including meat, bones, and dairy products, as well as paper towels and napkins…and offers residents a convenient way to reduce their trash disposal costs.
The material collected is processed into compost by Cayuga Compost in Trumansburg and sold to homeowners, landscapers and farmers as a soil amendment.
"The food scraps recycling program has played a significant role toward meeting the County's waste diversion goals," said Solid Waste Manager Barbara Eckstrom. "So far this year, the drop spots have seen over 29,600 drops and collected over 475,500 pounds of material."
