Penn Yan - 2018 Democratic Congressional Nominee Tracy Mitrano (NY-23) announced today that she will seek the 2020 Democratic nomination for the district's seat in the House of Representatives.
"Running for Congress over the last sixteen months was the honor of a lifetime." Mitrano said. "My 2018 campaign was about so much more than me—it was about the families, farmers, students, and seniors in this district who deserve better than they're getting.
"The results of November 6th don't change the facts: the people of Western New York, the Finger Lakes, and the Southern Tier deserve affordable healthcare, education that doesn't come with a lifetime of debt, modern infrastructure, proper conservation of our natural resources, and tax policies that serve the working and middle class—not the 1% and big corporations. I am committed to working for those causes and these people."
"Though we didn't cross the finish line this time around, we built a grassroots movement that will continue to grow over the next two years," Mitrano continued, describing the advantage of building on the just-finished 2018 campaign. "I am deeply grateful to the hundreds of supporters who have urged me to run again, and I have always said I was in this fight for the long haul.
"The last Democrat to win this district did so on his second run, and I now understand why. This year, we increased turnout 40% over the last midterm, and we outperformed historical averages in 8 of 11 counties. Building on this name recognition, field program, and fundraising infrastructure, we can compete with whoever our opponent is in 2020."
Mitrano will launch her 2020 campaign with a Thank You Tour of events for her volunteers and supporters in each of the district's eleven counties. After that, she will commence a Listening Tour of communities to hear the concerns of constituents.
