Mark S. LewisMark S. LewisThis winter seems to be going faster than most, perhaps in part due to the fact that we haven’t had much of a winter (which, by the way, is fine with me!) and due, perhaps, as well, because of the sizeable number of important initiatives that are on the school district’s agenda. The February 6th construction referendum public awareness activity is one of the top initiatives. It has been months, even years, in the planning, and now is the time for the voters to consider it.

In the days and weeks to come you will receive information in the mail reporting the details of the propositions to be voted upon. Please take a few moments to review it. You will also receive follow-up post card reminders to be sure to vote on February 6th.

A number of informational presentations have been scheduled for specific groups throughout January. Two public hearings are scheduled for Tuesday, January 23 and Monday, January 29, respectively. All members of the public are cordially invited to attend. Please contact Ms. Rusaw if you have a neighborhood (or other) group that would like the outreach group to present referendum information prior to the vote. We’ll make every effort to schedule a mutually convenient date. Board of education members, administrators, and community awareness group members will also be distributing flyers at school events in the weeks to come.

Remember: absentee ballots are available if you are not in the region on February 6th, or if you cannot get to the polls due to certain health reasons. You must, however, apply for an absentee ballot. To do so, simply call Ms. Jodie Rusaw, District Clerk, at 533-4294, extension 4000 to request an application. You can mail the completed application back to Ms. Rusaw or stop by the District Office with your completed application. If you apply for an absentee ballot the week before the vote (January 30 through February 5th), you must, by law, come to the district office for an application. It cannot be sent to you through the mail.

One final piece of information: Please visit the school district website (www.lansingschools.org) for information pertaining to the referendum. Click on the link on the home page that reads “Capital Project Information”. Be sure to visit it often as we are endeavoring to provide as much up-to-date information as possible.

Your vote is important! Please take the time to vote on February 6th between the hours of 7am and 9pm at the lobby of the middle school auditorium.
