“Throughout my tenure in the State Legislature, I have worked to improve the lives of all New Yorkers suffering from psychiatric disabilities,” said Senator Nozzolio. “This is a truly great honor and I thank NYAPRS for this recognition.”

Senator Nozzolio is sponsor of legislation that would discontinue the use of Special Housing Units (SHU) in New York’s prisons, making prisons safer for prisoners and correctional officers. The legislation would mandate alternative prison housing and treatment for prisoners with psychiatric disabilities and would provide for mental health training for correctional officers.

In addition, Senator Nozzolio aggressively supported Timothy’s Law, which requires insurance companies to cover treatment for most mental illnesses and a broad range of mental conditions specifically related to children.

Harvey Rosenthal, Executive Director of NYAPRS, said, “We are pleased to honor Senator Nozzolio with our Public Policy Leadership Award in recognition of his efforts to improve the lives of all New Yorkers with psychiatric disabilities. Senator Nozzolio is a great advocate for NYAPRS in the Senate and this award represents our many thanks for his years of support.”

NYAPRS is dedicated to improving services and social conditions for people with psychiatric disabilities and trauma-related conditions by promoting their recovery, rehabilitation and rights.

NYAPRS honored Senator Nozzolio at a ceremony in the Clark Auditorium at the New York State Museum.
