At approximately 9:40pm Deputies while patrolling Route 34 observed Jason S. McDowell age 26 of 16 Reach Run, Lansing, New York, traveling northbound on Route 34 following a vehicle at an unsafe distance. Deputies subsequently stopped McDowell and determined that he was intoxicated.

McDowell submitted to a chemical test to determine his intoxication, which indicated a blood alcohol content of .10%.

McDowell was arraigned before the Ithaca Town Court and was released to appear in the Lansing Town Court on February 21, 2008 At approximately 2:00am. Deputies while operating radar on Route 34 (East Shore Drive) observed Mathew K. McGarry age 25 of 1619 Sherwood Road, Aurora, New York, traveling northbound on Route 34 at a speed of 58 miles per hour in a 45 miles per hour speed zone. Deputies subsequently stopped McGarry and determined that he was intoxicated.

McGarry submitted to a chemical test to determine his intoxication, which indicated a blood alcohol content of 17%.

McGarry was released to appear in the Ithaca Town Court on March 13, 2008


Shooting Incident

On February 22, 2008 at approximately 1:00am Deputies responded to the 500 block of Sheldon Road in Freeville regarding a fight in progress. Upon arrival Deputies learned that a suspect involved in the fight had allegedly discharged a firearm through the glass in the front door of the residence. The residence was occupied at the time.

The suspect fled the scene on foot. Deputies assisted by the New York State Police searched the area and were not able to locate the suspect. Sheriff's' Investigator's interviewed the occupants of the residence and when the residents returned to the Sheldon Road address, they discovered that the suspect had been inside their residence. Footprints in the snow lead from the back door of the residence to a 10'x12' shed located behind the residence. The resident checked the shed and observed movement inside.

Deputies assisted by the State Police established a perimeter around the shed. Deputies attempted to negotiate with the person in the shed with negative results. The SWAT Team was activated in conjunction with the Crises Intervention Negotiation Team (CINT). Negotiations continued through the morning and at approximately 10:05am the suspect surrendered to authorities.

Sheldon Road between the intersections of Bone Plain Road and West Dryden Road was closed for approximately 4 hours.

Sheriff's Investigators are interviewed the suspect and additional witnesses at 1:25 pm. At 3:02 pm Sheriff's Investigators arrested Jeffrey A. Bartlett Jr. age 25 of 370 George Road, Freeville, New York.  He was charged with Reckless Endangerment in the First Degree, a Class D Felony, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree, a Class D Felony, and Menacing in the First Degree, a Class E Felony

Bartlett was arraigned in the Dryden Town Court. he was remanded to the Tompkins County Jail in liue of $10,000 cash bail, $20,000 bail bond.

The investigation still continues.
