What does a village do when it's codes and ordinances are stuffed into a notebook?  That question was answered for Ithaca High School students who observed the regular Village of Lansing Board of Trustees meeting Monday (9/19) night.  Mayor Donald Hartill explained to the four visiting students that Codification is putting all of the village's codes and laws into a standard format, indexed to make rules easy to find.

The Village has been working on codification for over five years to try to get all ordinances and village rules into a form that is easily accessible.  This will make it simpler for village officials and residents to figure out what is allowed in any given circumstance.

Mayor Hartill outlined the steps in Codification:

      • Hire a legal consultant to write a preliminary draft
      • The Village's Legal Council David Dubow checks the draft for accuracy and to make sure it is consistent with current law
      • A public hearing is held
      • The Village Trustees approve the final draft
      • On an ongoing basis the code is updated in a systematic fashion

Mr. Dubow had prepared documents for the board to act on.  The first step was to vote on a resolution to hold a public hearing, which the Trustees approved unanimously.  Next the Village will advertise the hearing, which will take place on October 17 in the regular Trustees meeting.  The final document will be used when the Trustees accept the codification.
