ImageWASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Rep. Michael A. Arcuri (NY-24) today announced over $7 million for local communities to improve public housing facilities through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Bill).

“Recovery funding for local housing authorities will increase and improve affordable housing for local families, and at the same time create construction jobs through new projects,” Arcuri said. “These funds will enable local housing authorities to address long-standing improvements to housing units, and in the process create jobs and increase energy efficiency. This is one more example of the Recovery Bill investing resources in Upstate New York.”

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced that public housing authorities can begin spending nearly $3 billion nationwide in funds through the Recovery Bill to make improvements to public housing units. HUD is informing 3,122 local housing authorities across the country that they can move forward on a backlog of previously under-funded capital improvement projects.

Recovery Bill Housing Funding Announced by Arcuri for Counties in the 24th Congressional District:

  • $2,530,377 for the Utica Housing Authority
  • $481,707 for the Rome Housing Authority
  • $259,018 for the Ilion Housing Authority
  • $282,835 for the Herkimer Housing Authority
  • $193,598 for the Oneonta Housing Authority
  • $185,367 for the Norwich Housing Authority
  • $666,752 for the Cortland Housing Authority
  • $94,885 for the Auburn Housing Authority
  • $386,684 for the Geneva Housing Authority
  • $649,230 for the Ithaca Housing Authority
  • $1,308,424 for the Binghamton Housing Authority

Recovery funding provided through HUD’s Public Housing Capital Fund Program doubles the Department’s annual support of local housing authorities to improve their public housing stock.  Funding will be allocated directly to these local housing authorities through an established federal formula.

HUD’s Capital Fund Program provides annual funding to public housing authorities to develop, finance, and/or modernize the public housing in their communities. This funding can also be used to make large-scale improvements such as new roofs and for the replacement of plumbing and electrical systems to more energy efficient standards.

The Recovery Bill, which Arcuri voted for and the President signed into law last month, also includes job creation measures such as: funding for infrastructure improvements; aid to states and localities; tax cuts for the middle class and small businesses; and, investments in education.
