On 06/16/09, at approximately 11:49 PM, deputies were dispatched to Dick's Sporting Goods at the Shops at Ithaca, 40 Catherwood Road, for an alarm activation. Upon arrival, fire was observed coming from the roof top above the store. Lansing Fire, Cayuga Heights Fire, and the Ithaca Fire Department responded to extinguish the fire and aid in the investigation.The investigation revealed that the fire had originated from two three-ring binders that had been lit upon the buildings roof top.
As a result of the investigation, Emma L. Briggs, age 17, of 1901 Danby Road, is charged with Arson in the Fourth Degree, a Class E Felony. She was released on her own recognizance and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Lansing Court on 06/18/09 at 7:00 PM.
Another subject, under the age of 16, was also charged with Arson 4th. Due to age, a name is not being released.
Arson 4th is defined in the Penal Law as "recklessly damaging a building or motor vehicle by intentionally starting a fire".
