ImageThe Pit Stop convenience store on the corner of East Shore and Ridge Roads stopped selling gasoline when their underground tanks failed a New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) inspection.  The Town Code Enforcement Office received Underground Facilities Protective Organization (UFPO)notification that the tanks will be excavated and removed.

"I don't have any proof that they are leaking," Town of Lansing Engineering and Planning Coordinator Jeff Overstrom told the Lansing Town Board Wednesday evening.  "I was told that they have gone beyond their life expectancy.  DEC is requiring them to be removed.

"We received the UFPO notification and I talked to the owner," Overstrom said.  "He said that he needs to remove the tanks."

"When they take the tanks out that soil will have to be tested," said Deputy Supervisor Connie Wilcox.  "There may not be an issue.  They did that at King Ferry.  Once they got the tanks out of there they were able to fill the holes back in.  There wasn't an issue with the soil.  Hopefully it will be the same thing here."

Wilcox noted that gasoline tank removal is done under official scrutiny and soil is tested and must be certified safe before filling in the hole.  The owner is responsible for any costs associated with removing the tanks.
