ImageBetter Housing For Tompkins County, Inc. was awarded $1,659,913 by the New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal's Housing Trust Fund Program for substantial renovation of the 24-year old Newfield Gardens facility. The 0% loan which closed and became available to spend on June 19th, 2009 will become a grant at the end of the 30-year compliance period.  An additional grant in the amount of $48,400 for the energy efficiency improvements comes from the New York State Energy Research and Development Agency becomes available after project completion.

As a Rural Preservation Company serving rural Tompkins County, Better Housing owns and manages the independent living apartments located at 261 Main Street in Newfield. The 28 unit project was originally funded by USDA Rural Development provides affordable living for seniors age 62 or over or disabled at any age.

The rehabilitation project that focuses on improving handicapped accessibility and energy efficiency using environmentally friendly materials and practices is expected to be completed in approximately nine months. Work began on July first. Robert Kurzon of Kurzon Architects has provided architectural services for the project.  Two Plus Four Construction Company of East Syracuse is the contractor.  Comfort Systems USA is the Performance Partner for the energy improvements. 

Some upgrades include installing a new elevator, centralized water heating system, new appliances and new windows. Andrew Piliero, Property Manager for Better Housing, explained that goal of the project is to enhance building systems at the property while maintaining its affordability.

“These improvements will ensure that Newfield Gardens is a viable housing option for elderly for years to come.” says Piliero.
