ImageAs construction continues on a gas station at the Lansing Tops Market, Village of Lansing officials approved minor changes to the signage on the site.  The plan calls for three pumps in the southeast corner of the Tops parking lot, across the access road from the video store.  A small kiosk will be manned by an attendant, but will not house a convenience store as the one at the downtown Tops does.

Underground tanks were installed this week, and footings for the kiosk are in place.  A Village Planning Board officials says that the gas station could be completed and ready for business by September.

Currently Tops and Martin's Super Food Stores operates 28 gas stations in New York and two in Pennsylvania.  Food Shoppers collect bonus points that further reduce the price per gallon during special time periods when the points must be redeemed.  The chain is investing $150 million to renovate existing locations and build beutween seven and 10 new ones over the next five years.  The Williamsville, New York company operates 71 full service markets in Central and Western New York, and Pennsylvania.

In January the chain was named one of the top ten retailers defying the economic downturn to post big gains by Retail Info Systems News.  Many, including Tops had announced expansion plans for 2009.

Changes to the sign are minimal, but required Village Board action.  The main sign will be slightly enlarged, with an LED section that will display gas prices.  The board passed the proposed changes unanimously.
