Kathy Miller, a Lansing resident for more than 20 years, announced her candidacy for the Lansing Town Board.

I moved to Lansing with my husband in 1986 when he took a job at Cornell.  We chose Lansing because of the wonderful schools and the opportunity to live in “the country”. All three of our children have graduated from Lansing High School and we feel blessed to have been able to raise our family in such a nurturing environment.

I have a degree and teaching certificate in biology from Wilkes University in PA. While living in Lansing I was first a staff  member and then director of the Lansing Drop In Center, Director of the Lansing Nursery School, a member of the LSD Board of Education, a teacher’s aide, substitute teacher, and teaching assistant in the LSD. I have also worked at Cornell University as a Research Support Specialist in Medical Genetics and been the secretary at All Saints Parish in Lansing.  Further, I was a founding member of the Lansing Community Library and have served on its board of directors and fund raising committee.  Most recently I was part of the Lansing Zoning Review Committee and am now chairperson of the Town Center Committee.  I believe my experience will guide me in making sound decisions as a member of the Town Board.

I believe in open government:  one that is responsive to the needs of the town as a whole and to its individuals.  I also know this is not an easy task.  I believe community  members need to receive accurate and timely information about the budget, tax issues, economic development and large scale residential development.  I believe community input is essential for sustainable growth that preserves the unique qualities of  Lansing.

To date Lansing’s residential growth has been slow and steady, with farm land giving way to new homes and small businesses.  I believe encouraging business development along specific corridors has the potential to increase the tax base for the future,  keep taxes manageable for individual home owners and protect our beautiful environment.  I will work to ensure that Lansing receives its share of state and local funding to accomplish this.

A hard working Town Board and involved citizenry are important to Lansing’s future.
If elected to the Town Board I intend to work hard and to always consider the opinions of Lansing residents in the decision making process.
