ImageIn response to last week’s tragedy at Cornell University, the Tompkins County American Red Cross urges all area residents to take precautions to help prevent the spread of the H1N1 pandemic flu virus.

Accordingly, be aware of possible flu symptoms – high fever, body aches, headache, extreme tiredness, sore throat, cough, runny or stuffy nose, vomiting or diarrhea.

Be proactive in protecting yourself – wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Rub vigorously, scrubbing fingernails and jewelry areas. Use a disposable towel and try not to touch surfaces after washing. When you sneeze or cough, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue. If you don’t have a tissue, sneeze or cough into your elbow or upper arm. Keep your hands away from your nose, mouth and eyes. If you feel sick, stay home to avoid possibly spreading the flu. Try to stay away from people who are sick and avoid sharing utensils – dinnerware, phones,  bottles. Wash or wipe down shared surfaces at home or at work with a disinfectant.

For more information on how you can do your part to halt the H1N1 pandemic flu and keep yourself healthy, go to the Tompkins County American Red Cross website, www.tompkins-redcross.org or call 273-1900 x26.
