In an extra meeting Lansing's Town Board approved a $1,730,870 tax levy for 2006. In a sparsely attended public hearing the Board presented the budget for the Town as well as for special districts. After public hearings in which nobody addressed the Board, they unanimously approved the budget.

This figure represents the total amount that will be raised by taxes, which goes to the Townwide fund (which included the Town and Village, Townwide Highway fund and Debt Service. Additional estimated revenue go to make up the remainder of the total budget. The "General Fund Outside the Village" and the "Highway Fund Outside the Village" don't come from taxes. These are funded using revenue from items like building permits, electrical and fire inspection fees and sales tax.

A separate public hearing was also conducted for special districts, which include lighting, sewer and water districts currently within the town (this does not include the proposed upcoming sewer district). Only residents within a municipal district pay taxes or fees in these cases. For example, if you are within a water district you are billed for your share of the debt repayment that was incurred in order to put in the pipes and related equipment for that district.

The Town's Bookkeeper/Personnel Officer Sharon Boman says that sales tax revenue has exceeded expected income for the fourth year in a row. This year the estimate was 1,038,256, but an additional $201,323 came to the town to make a total of $1,239,579. When this happens the extra money is placed in the Town's reserve fund.

Ms. Bowman explains that the budget process begins each August. As Town officials develop the budget she is in constant contact with the County Assessment Office to make sure that the budget will be palatable to taxpayers. Adjustments are made based on the information they give her until the process is completed in October. The final step is the public hearings and the Town Board's vote.

With no public comment, the public hearings were closed and the Board approved the budget unanimously. All in all the expected revenue from taxes and other sources is $1,810,019 for 2006. The tax rate will come to $1.7122 per $1000 of assessed value on residents' property. In addition to that residents will pay just over $1.02 per thousand to the Fire District plus any fees incurred by being part of a special district.
