ImageAfter a drug scare in June in which Lansing middle and high school students were falsely rumored to be arrested, parents asked school officials for a program on drugs.  This year Superintendent Stephen Grimm and his leadership team have been farming data from an anonymous youth development survey students tilled out a year ago, as well as planning events to help parents and students be aware of the hazards of illegal drugs.

Next Thursday (November 12) the school district will offer a 'Parent University' on drugs at Lansing High School.  Only parents are invited to the 7pm Thursday event.   The district will provide babysitting services for parents that need them.  Students will have attended a companion event earlier in the day, tailored for them.

"This design of providing students, parents, and teachers a common framework of understanding should yield rich opportunities for meaningful dialogue," Grimm says.

The program will be presented by Gary Metz and David Monk, each with more than 25 years of experience in strategies to fight substance abuse.  Their presentation will cover marijuana, inhalants, pharmaceutical drugs and drug paraphernalia.  The two present drug prevention programs at schools across the state.

Metz is coordinator of Alcohol/Substance Abuse Studies for the State University of New York at Brockport, Co-Director Institute for Public Safety Policy Studies  (IPSPS),  and an associate professor of Health Science.  He has served as director of three federal drug free school discretionary grants, and a number of other anti-drug programs.

Monk is Associate Director of Law Enforcement Education Programs for Monroe Community College Public Safety Training Center and an adjunct professor at the State University of New York College at Brockport, in the Health Science and Public Administration Departments.  He is certified as an alcohol and substance abuse counselor and addictions specialist, and has directed two drug free school discretionary grants.  He is a former policeman with 14 years in narcotic and drug gang investigations.
