hanna_rep_120Washington, D.C. – Moving postal processing operations out of Utica would have a negative impact on the local economy and identity, U.S. Representative Richard Hanna (R,C,I-NY) said this week.

In a letter sent Tuesday to U.S. Postmaster General Patrick R. Donahoe, Hanna points out that the Utica Processing and Distribution Facility is one of the top nationwide, and states that any changes being considered should be based on merit, efficiency and productivity.

“I certainly understand the Postal Service’s financial struggles in this economy, not to mention dealing with technological innovations that decrease the demand for traditional mail services,” Hanna said. “I’ve been in business all my life and I understand tough decisions have to be made. However, closing the Utica plant, considering its productivity and performance may well be a rash and detrimental action.”

Hanna requested information about the consolidation process and told Donahoe that he expects that U.S.P.S. officials will fully investigate and study any possible consolidation prior to making a decision.

“The Utica plant is operating with an extremely high efficiency and productivity rate because of the dedicated and knowledgeable employees,” Hanna said. “Closing the Utica plant won’t help maintain the level of service customers have come to know and expect.”
