culvert_120This week's New york State Department Of Transportation (DOT) advisory said that a culvert replacement project that has closed Auburn Road (34B) since mid-September could be completed by November 7th.  The culvert is in front of the girl's juvenile detention facility, about a tenth of a mile south of Bower road in Lansing.

Originally the culvert was scheduled to be replaced next year, but it was mover higher in DOT's priorities when it was discovered that  salt damage, normal wear and tear, and old age have contributed to severe deterioration of concrete and steel in the structure.

The closure has caused noticeable traffic increases along Ridge Road, and merchants at the corner of Triphammer Road and 34B have complained of a drop in business since the road was closed.  While temporary 'weight limit' signs have been placed on Van Ostrand and Conlon Roads, heavy trucks have been observed taking those routes.  Officially the detour routes all traffic on one of two routes: Route 34B to 90 to 34 for regular traffic, and Route 13 to 281 to Interstate 81 to 20 to 34 for over-width, over- height and “R” permitted vehicles.

At this stage the old culvert has been removed, and workers were preparing the space for the new culvert.  A large crane is on site that will presumably be used to put the prefabricated culvert in place.

The DOT alerts says, "The scheduled road, ramp and lane closures listed above are subject to change due to adverse weather conditions or unforeseen logistical complications."
