Ithaca City Officials confirmed yesterday that the Clinton Street Bridge and Prospect Street will be re-opened to vehicular traffic today, Friday, November 16, 2012 at 3:30pm, following brief celebratory remarks that will begin at 3:00 p.m.  The bridge closing has long made access to the Ithaca Police Department and destinations like Ithaca College difficult for Ithaca commuters.

“Upon the re-opening of the Clinton Street Bridge and Prospect Street, I officially declare “Carmageddon” over!” states Ithaca Mayor Svante L. Myrick.  “It’s been an exciting year of new construction, and more projects are underway.  I understand the inconvenience and toll these projects can have on the traveling public and I just want to express my thanks for everyone’s patience.”

The bridge was closed on April 30, 2012 and work completed to date includes: a complete bridge replacement, installation of new water and sanitary sewer lines, construction of retaining walls and one sidewalk, and a partial street reconstruction.  The bridge will most likely see lane restrictions next Spring to facilitate further street and sidewalk construction.  The project is scheduled to be fully completed by July, 2013.

“I’m really pleased with the amount of progress that the contractor has made on this project since April” states Superintendent of Public Works William J. Gray.  “While we still have a lot of work to complete before the project is complete, the re-opening of the bridge to vehicular traffic is a major accomplishment” adds Gray.
