Rep. Tom Reed is calling for a rapid reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) in the House of Representatives. “I feel very strongly that the House needs to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act and I joined a group of my colleagues on a letter to leadership urging them to move forward without delay,” he said. “I believe in protecting America’s women from domestic violence in all its forms and will support legislation that bans domestic violence against all women. This is long overdue.”

In May 2012, Reed voted in the House in support of the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2012. The bill passed in the House with bipartisan support.

Reed says it is vital to provide the resources necessary to continue programs that deter violence and provide assistance to women when domestic violence does occur.

“The country’s spending problem should not mean we ignore the safety of American women,” Reed continued. “Each and every taxpayer dollar must be prioritized for key programs like VAWA.”

“We can help to prevent domestic abuse if we provide women and law enforcement the tools that they need to prevent these horrible acts of violence,” Reed continued. “Should a woman be the victim of any violent crime, she should have the protection from her assailant she deserves but also the care she and her family need to recover physically and emotionally.”

Reed and 16 House Republican colleagues sent the letter to Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor.

The Violence Against Women Act was first enacted in 1994 and has been reauthorized twice since, in 2000 and 2005.
