ITHACA – Laila L. Steele, age 88 of Ithaca, a retired assembler with National Cash Register, died Thursday (September 15, 2005) at the Reconstruction Home in Ithaca. Mrs. Steele was born March 7, 1917 in Calumet Township in Michigan, a daughter of the late Hannes & Emma Runttila Keturi.

Mrs. Steele was an avid reader and she enjoyed gardening, bird watching, cooking and canning. She will always be remembered for her appreciation for nature and taking long walks on her property.

Survivors include her two daughters, Terisa (Philip) Minick of Dayton, Ohio, Renee Milton of Ithaca; 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Steele is predeceased by her husband, Melvin C. Steele, who died December 2, 1979, her son, Carl John Steele, who died July 6, 2005, a sister, Tilley Poynte, two brothers, Urho and Into Keturi.

Friends and family may call Monday (September 19, 2005) at 10 a.m. until the time of Funeral Service at 11 a.m. at the Herson Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Willow Glen Cemetery, Ithaca. Memorials may be made to the Tompkins County SPCA.
