Born on October 2, 1936, Jane was a daughter of the late Albert and Lillian Mayo. She grew up in Aurora, NY, and made her way to Lansing where she met and married her best friend and husband of 55 years, Chuck Bower.
Jane retired from the NYS Division of Youth with 25 years of service. Everybody that knew her knew she was a very special lady. She will be remembered for her crafts, her flowers, pies and dinners. Jane was in the process of making a very special garden which she worked many hours on. She was a busy person, and kept Chuck going every weekend. In the summer it was off to the races watching Chucky race cars, watching Ben race motocross, or watching Rachel cheerlead. She went to all her family’s sporting events.
In the winter it was off to Florida to spend time with Karla, Jessica, Josh and the great grandchildren, Devon and Brianna. She would have them up for a couple of weeks in the summer and she would be seen giving them rides on her scooter.
On October 17th Jane spent the day with Curtis sitting and rocking in the chair all day!
She had numerous friends, but there are a few that brought a lot of joy to her. Betty and Tom Hagin were the camping buddies. Betty and Jane could be seen snickering around the races. I could tell you some stories but….. Sherry Hildreth was not only Jane’s niece but her card playing partner as well. Everyone that played against them said they were cheaters, but we don’t believe it. Jane had been friends with Eleanor for 38 years. They say that in-laws don’t get along – but here’s the exception…friends and casino buddies.
In addition to her husband, Chuck, Jane is survived by their four children; son, Chuck and Cindy of Lansing along with their boys, Anthony and Shelby, Chad and Barbie and children, Brandon and the newest great grandson, Curtis; daughter, Karla Leonard of Florida and her children, Jessica VanNest and great grandchildren Devon and Brianna and Joshua and Stephanie VanNest; son, Doug and Susan of Locke and their children, Ben and Rachel; son, David and Andrea of Auburn. She is also survived by two sisters, Ruthie Turo and Laura Turo.
Jane was preceded in death by her sisters, Nora, Betty, Teat and several brothers.
I am sure everyone will miss Jane in their own special way, including her rescued kitty, Tigger.
In keeping with Jane’s wishes, there will be no calling hours and services will be private at the convenience of the family.
