I second Kerry Barnes's article advocating the adoption of older pets. A few years ago, we took in a dog that was 9 or 10. She was everything Kerry said, the perfect pet. My family still misses her but feel that we gave her the best years of her life, and she gave unlimited love and loyalty.
We'd be doing it again if we hadn't fallen for a younger dog at the SPCA that had been abused. After six months, she has learned to trust again, and we're very happy with her.

But we had to re-learn the energy demands involved. It's like having another kid, and we have wistful memories of the easy-going, mellow ways of an older dog.
