I enjoyed reading the article about the archiving of the history of the Village of Lansing. I am working with Gerry Monaghan to donate some materials that I still have in my files regarding the formation of the Village.
I would like to make two corrections to the information presented in the article.
I was a part of the group that formed the Village over the period 1972 - 1974, and joined the first Village Board as a Trustee, Deputy Mayor, and Mayor, following Mayor Seymour Schmidt, for a total of 18 years (1972 - 1989). It was a great experience for which I shall always be grateful. I strongly encourage anyone interested in contributing to their community to get involved in the process of government.
I would like to point out that in 1972, when the Village Study Group started to explore our options regarding planning and zoning for our area, our main concern was the development of sewers, not Pyramid Mall, in the southern end, which would rapidly increase uncontrolled development because there was no planning or zoning in effect. Pyramid Mall was already started and we knew that more growth was imminent. We worked very hard between 1972 to 1974 to understand the NYS laws for forming a village, educate the residents about the need for land use planning and pursue the steps that would give the residents a choice in determining future development of the area. In December of 1974, after a vote on becoming a village, our efforts were successful by a margin of 25 votes.
I look forward to visiting the Lansing Library to see the archives.
Sincerely,
Anne Furry
