mailmanMany recent letters criticizing Barbara Lifton have stated that her support of closing the AES cayuga power plant is harmful to 'our kids'  by removing a source of funding for Lansing schools   There is no doubt that a loss of significant income for the Lansing schools is not trivial;  however, I believe that we need to think of a much broader notion of 'kids.'

Surely those in schools now might feel some effects of the loss of tax income, but this is only a temporary loss, and one that can be ameliorated.  As the current Lansing students age and have families, there will be many more 'kids' who need to have clean water, clean air, and good food.

Climate change, resulting from over-dependence on fossil fuels, threatens the futures of everyone.  Closing a coal burning plant that is, according to many analyses,  not needed is one step to ensuring the health and well-being of our future 'kids.'
