If anyone thinks road construction in Lansing is bad, you should try driving around Ithaca this summer. While you can get through the logjams on Triphammer Road in just a minute or two, Ithaca has become a perpetual maze . Try driving down Court Street and you'll find it fenced off with enormous holes dug into it. It's been that way for a year and there is no sign that it is near finished.

In the past I've joked that a Lansing traffic jam is two cars and a chicken, but that is not too far off the mark. Roads are well cared for, with consideration for local drivers. The State managed to replace a bridge on Route 34 just South of Searles Road in only two months. The Village Board has received fewer complaints about the Triphammer traffic than expected, and having gone through the one-lane areas several times I can tell you it is not a problem. The portion of Buck Road that was repaved was done quickly, and it is a beautiful job.

Having grown up and learned to drive in a big city, one of the things I have always appreciated about Lansing is how easy it is to get around in light traffic. Every time I am in stopped traffic I remind myself of that and it doesn't seem so bad. As far as I'm concerned, that chicken can take its time.
