Once again, the Lansing community is faced with another decision and again it is in regard to our schools and our children. And once again an outcry comes from parts of the community that our taxes would go up if a project or a budget is approved. The cry of "enough is enough" reverberates.
I agree, enough is enough. Please stop the complaining. This Capital project is desperately needed. Our schools, the "jewel" of our community need this project. Our children need this project. If this project is not undertaken at this time when at least some State funding is available, it will have to be taken in one form or another at a later time, and perhaps with little to no state funding. That just doesn’t make sense. Yes the funding is not as much as we would have hoped, but it is more then nothing.
The project when both propositions are passed would cost ninety eight cents per thousand dollars of accessed property value. What does that equate to? Well for a home or business property that have access value of $100,000 that would be $ 98/year increase in taxes.
So lets do the math, 98 dollars divided by 365 days equals roughly 27 cents per day (26.8493 cents to be more precise). That’s less then the cost of a daily newspaper, and certainly less then the cost of a latte at Starbucks, Gimme Coffee or the Lansing Coffee Shop or even a regular coffee at the local gas stations. Frankly, I think that our children are worth a heck of a lot more then that. Oh, by the way as a multiple property owner in Lansing, my tax increase will be more the 27 cents per day, but in my opinion our children, their teachers and the staff at our schools deserve a better place to learn and work.
I’ll just skip the lattes.
