Much of what we now know as Lansing was a series of military lots, land that was divided up in 1760 to pay Revolutionary War soldiers for their service. John Lansing, General Schuyler's secretary was charged with doling out these lots in 1791.
So the people who settled this area were the same people who fought for American Independence. That means Lansing people have fought for American freedom and independence for as long as there has been an America, a proud heritage indeed.
The Fourth of July is a time to remember this, and to be grateful to the individuals who have fought for and continue to fight for our freedom. That's what we're really celebrating when we watch our fireworks and eat our chicken. That's a great reason to visit the Lansing Historical Association tent this Saturday, as well. To learn more of the part Lansing has played in our country's great history.
Happy 4th of July!
