In reading through the interviews for all four candidates for the Town Board that appeared in the Oct. 23 issue, I was struck by the absence of any serious questions about Village/Town relations given the recent snow plowing contract episode. This is just one more example of the interests of one third of the population of the Town are being ignored in the whole process.
In the property assessment base for the Town, the assessment of Village properties is one third of that base which means that Villagers pay one third of the Part A budget which pays all the Town administrative costs, snow plowing for the Town roads outside the Village, the largest fraction of the personnel costs of the highway department, etc. The Part B budget (for residents outside the Village) is paid for by user fees for the general fund and the highway fund is funded entirely by sales tax revenue and CHIPS state funding and pays for a significant fraction of the normal road maintenance, road capital improvements, etc.
I hope that the candidates can be made to understand the importance of addressing the concerns of this one third of the population of the Town of Lansing.
Best regards
Don Hartill, Mayor
Village of Lansing
