ToThePointLogoSummer has not been a disappointment. The forecast has seen its share of hot, hazy, and humid weather. Utility companies across the state have seen record usage for the month of July as temperatures soared into the 90's and passed the 100 degree mark in New York City.

Although some have complained about the heat, those of us who enjoy gardening have been delighted with this summer's abundance of sun. Though we may have had to water during those dry spells, flower and vegetable growers are harvesting a bumper crops this year. Stop by the Farmers' Market and ask them their secret to successful gardening.

Weeds have been especially prolific as well. As usual, they seem to grow at twice the rate of the vegetables in our garden.

What strikes many as an added bonus to the many joys of summer is the quality of our fruits and vegetables. The strawberries, blueberries, peaches, and melons have been the tastiest in years. Local sweet corn, a delicacy even for the most carnivorous of eaters, has surpassed all expectation in sweetness, color, and flavor. Farmers predict the apple crop will be just as bountiful and sweet as the rest of this year's fruits and vegetables.

Another feature of summer, the Concerts at Myers Park, has added to the abundance of summertime pleasures. This year music lovers have been entertained by new and diverse bands bringing to our area music most would not have a chance to hear. With the breeze off the lake and the shade provided by the Cottonwoods, Oaks, and Maples, Thursday Evenings have offered a chance to sit and relax while listening to free live music.

The grand finale of our summertime celebration will be this Saturday's, Harbor Festival at Myers Park. At first, the idea of a "Harbor Festival" seemed a bit of a stretch. True, Lansing does boast of its own harbor and lighthouse, but how could such a little town compete with other water front venues located in such exotic places as Oswego and Rochester.

The answer was simple, "Why not." The organizers of Lansing Harbor Festival are putting the final touches on this year's big event. Past attendance had exceeded everyone's expectation. Area bands, local artisans and crafters, a 5-Kilometer Race and the Bob Baker Memorial Chicken Cook-off have attracted ever increasing crowds with some attendees coming from neighboring counties and even across the border.

With the sun setting a bit earlier each evening and nights getting cooler, nature is reminding us to act fast. These signs serve as a reminder to take advantage of all that Lansing still has to offer. So sit back, relax, and enjoy what is still left of our wonderful summer. You'll be glad you did. And that is to the point.
