mailmanSince having a heart attack and a stent installed 4 ½ years ago, I’ve obediently stuck to very low-fat foods. I miss many old favorites, but I’ve found some workarounds. For instance, I can order a pizza at Ciao!, because they’ll make it with vegan cheese. Not quite the same, but acceptable.

Burgers are another problem. Even ground turkey breast is usually too fatty, because it may include skin. But ground skinless, it can cook up dry as balsa wood.

The cavalry has arrived as boxes of frozen turkey burgers by Bubba. They’re delicious fried in canola oil, grilled, or chunked into recipes such as chili. Only Bubba turkey burgers can say Heart Healthy on the box. The other brands have too much saturated fat.

Lansing Market is the only store in the area that has them. So far, Bubba turkey burgers aren’t in the display case. Just stick your head into the back room and tell the meat guy you want a box. For flavor and convenience, they’re worth it.
