This summer the Recreation Department has had some trouble filling the Small Fry Football Senior team.  The program begins August 22 and has a Junior and Senior team.  The junior team is made of grades 4 and 5 with some 3rd graders.  The Senior team is made of 6th and 7th graders.

Recreation Director Stephen Colt thinks there are many factors contributing to the Senior team not filling.  7th graders can play in the Small Fry program or in modified football, so the pool of possible players is split between the two.  Also "there is a dip in the population of those teams, and there are more girls than boys," he said.  While girls can play, more boys are attracted to football.

The Lansing teams will play in the Tompkins County Youth Football League.  Games are on Sundays beginning September 4th with some weekday games possible.  The teams will be cheered on by participants in the Small Fry Cheerleading squad which is also part of the Fall Rec. program, coached by Jodi Dake.

Mr. Colt, who is the President and founder of the league, considered bumping the age group down a year for each team so that the Senior team wouldn't have to compete for players with the modified level team.  But there were not enough votes, so the current age ranges were retained.  He remains optimistic, though.  "If we can keep a spark we'll have a flame again," he said.  "Everyone can play soccer," he noted, "but not everyone can play football."  He is hoping that more will in future seasons.
